- Consider all options, including those that are not yet known. If you are looking at a new car, ask yourself what features would make it most useful for you (e.g., GPS navigation system).
- List pros and cons of each alternative, using words like “good,” “bad,” “neat,” etc., as well as adjectives such as “bigger” or “smaller.” Try using numbers where possible (e.g., larger than 5 feet tall), but remember that numbers only go so far in expressing feelings! Also consider whether there are any risks associated with each choice; if so, be sure to list them here too!
Solution Evaluation and Selection
Once you have a solution in mind, it’s time to evaluate the pros and cons of each option. To do this, use a decision matrix (a grid) or other method that helps make sure that you consider all possible consequences of your decision. Ask yourself: how will this change my life for the better? What would happen if I don’t do this? How will I feel about myself if I choose one option over another?
